This webinar describes the proposal writing process, through answering frequently encountered questions, and providing examples of the various sections of a proposal.  It is most applicable to research or program project proposals. The webinar first starts with Dr. Minkovitz, who discusses necessary considerations when completing a grant application, such as knowing your audience, choosing the correct question, and understanding differences in evaluation criteria (e.g. HRSA versus NIH). She also addresses key components of grants and the importance of having mentors review your grant before submission. Next, Dr. Armstrong presents the “Pearls and Pitfalls of Grant Preparation”. He touches on advance planning, figures and tables, and using measures that match hypotheses. Throughout their presentations, both Dr. Minkovitz and Dr. Armstrong stress the importance of consistency in the grant writing process. A 15 minute question and answer session complete the webinar.

New Public Health Administrators Series: Grant Writing

This 2-hour course provides an overview of skills and tools of grant writing, which can be applied to several grant-awarding organizations, such as government agencies and foundations. Specifically, the module discusses locating grant awarding organizations, describes steps involved in preparing a grant application, the resources needed in preparing a grant application, the reporting obligations once a grant is awarded, the implications of grant awards to agency budgets, and how to identify additional resources for grant writers. There are four video clips provided in this course: 1) What is a Grant?, 2) Defining Grant Terms, 3) Steps to Proposal Preparation, and 4) Tips on Grant Writing. Specific examples of grant awarding organizations in Iowa are also highlighted. Practice exercises are provided at the end of each video clip.
